• Task 1 (selection of texts)
Choose two texts by native speakers/writers of English from two different registers: one text should be spoken (a natural conversation/dialogue between two or more speakers) about any subject taken from TV, radio, magazine, newspaper or any other source) and the other text should be written (academic prose) text in English taken from any academic source. The written text can be about any specialized subject (e.g. medicine, law, education, arts, politics etc.). Each text should be about 200-250 words in length. The texts you choose should be RECENT; i.e. published over the last 2- 3 weeks. You can access most daily newspapers, magazines or academic proceedings on the internet.

In this task you should analyze the experiential meanings in the two texts as outlined in Book 3, Unit 13, section 4 using the SFL aspects and analytical methodology. You can also refer to Unit 15 and 16 for more information, illustration and practice that are relevant to this TMA.
You need to clarify how cohesive devices are deployed to build experiential and interpersonal meanings to create a coherent text; how cohesive patterns are interpreted in relation to the contextual variable of mode and in terms of their role in building those experiential and interpersonal meanings and why certain uses of lexical cohesion make a text more or less effective.
• Task 3 (comparison of the 2 texts; 750-1000 word essay)
In this task you should write an essay (750-1000 words) in which you discuss, explain and compare the two media articles depending on the findings provided by the raw text analysis you performed in Task 2. You should suggest reasons for, and communicative effects of, the differences (i.e. differences in views and ideas of the same event/topic). You should illustrate your discussion/comparison with examples taken from the two texts you analyzed in Task 2.

You are required to write no more than 1,500 words, but you will also need to present some of your findings in graphical or tabular form. Please indicate at the end of your essay the number of words you have used.
Before you start this assignment, refer to the general guidance on completing and submitting your assignments on page 41 in the course guides booklet that you have received with the package.
• Task 1 (selection of texts)
Choose two texts by native speakers/writers of English from two different registers: one text should be spoken (a natural conversation/dialogue between two or more speakers) about any subject taken from TV, radio, magazine, newspaper or any other source) and the other text should be written (academic prose) text in English taken from any academic source. The written text can be about any specialized subject (e.g. medicine, law, education, arts, politics etc.). Each text should be about 200-250 words in length. The texts you choose should be RECENT; i.e. published over the last 2- 3 weeks. You can access most daily newspapers, magazines or academic proceedings on the internet.
You should expect to spend a reasonable amount of time selecting your texts, as your choice of text will potentially affect the quality of your answer. AOU would like to develop a Web Based Social Network System between a job seeker and Industry
Recruiter. This system will be expected to provide communication among people , provide the features of writing and posting a post or any event all at one place, to share the job related details posted by university career guidance officer via adding a post which can be read by all the students as well as members of faculty using the website. This web application will be controlled by the AOU IT administrator and can be used by the career guidance officer and students as well as faculty members.
The following features will be implemented in proposed system:
Students can register and login into the system once their registration is approved by the administrator.
The system verifies the user id and password.
Once the student logging into the system, he/she can write and post an article on various topic of
his/her choice. Also he/she can chat with the other students.
Students can also upload images with their post.
All students can view News Feed posted by individual student.
AOU IT Administrator has full authority on system, he/she can add/delete Students and members of Faculty
Career Guidance Officer can create a list of students by specifying the department and criteria. This list will include personal details, academic details and GPA. He /she can perform activities only after logging into the system.
Career Guidance Officer can add post and it will be sent for approval to admin.
Faculty members will be able view students’ profiles and also can post event whose details will be sent via SMS to students. Faculty members can perform activities only after logging into the system.
As per the policy, all the students’ registration will be approved/rejected by the administrator as
well as, all the post will be kept pending until administrator approves/rejects each and every post.
The university management wished to have a website with two colors matching with their logo. The system is expected to handle up to 1000 users simultaneously and shall be able to be modified to cope with a new class of user.

It is desired to develop a database for the university scenario mentioned in Question-2. The university would desire to have a system to keep track of its students, news feeds, images, faculty members and employees.

The university has registered with a registration number, description, address and phone number. The
university is contracted with many employees, the employees can be faculty members, IT administrators and Career Guidance Officers. There are many students registered in the university. For every employee,
the system will store an employee id, first name, middle name, last name, address, telephone number and job title. For each student the system keeps a student id, first name, middle name, last name, date of birth, telephone number and address will record as their details.
The website will be created by the university to provide the features of writing and posting a post or any event all at one place, the events are uploaded as news feeds or sometimes images. The students may post one or many events, there are two types of events: news feeds and images. The students are able to read events posted by other students. After every event the system updates the events happened. The employees are able to make the updates whenever necessary. An event will be identified by event Id, description and Type. All the events are updated by the employees with an event ID, Date and Time of the event happened.

Guidance to Question 01
For this question you need to read the assigned article carefully and to reflect back on concept file 04 for the theoretical assessment.
(a)At this stage of the course you are expected to have developed good understanding of the purpose of drawing spray diagrams as part of applying the SUDA process for solving a messy situation. A spray diagram is the first type of diagrams drawn in the sensing phase of the SUDA process of mess analysis, in order to summarize the main ideas of a case, or the main components/elements of a situation. Please pay attention to the conventions and make sure that the central topic and other subtopics are relevant, and do make sense to the reader. Go back to T552 (Diagramming) the appendix to refresh your memory about the conventions.
(b)This is your first attempt at drawing control model diagram. The task should not be challenging though. Refer to Concept file 04 section II “Control”. You need to draw a control model diagram to show how the selected inputs can reach the stated goal. You also need to illustrate clear, relevant, and non-overlapping inputs, clear and accurate transformation process and an output which is consistent with the goal. You also need to specify which organizational entity is in charge of assuming the role of each of the elements/components of the control model (i.e. actuator, sensor, and comparator). The parties in charge of performing each task within the control mechanism should be clearly identified. It is very important that your diagram is specific rather than generic.
(c)Here you need to practice your analytical skills to assess what is required. Remember to start with a good introduction in which you define the assessed topic before moving on to explaining your plan for working on the TMA. In the body you should move on to assess the causes of the problems faced by Toyota and the impact of the organization’s structure, climate and decision making on its reaction to the problem. You also need to evaluate whether Toyota is a learning organization by relying on both theoretical principles and practical examples, and on the ideas presented in the assigned article.
